Ronda

The quintessential Andalusian 'pueblo blanco' is a must-see at any time of year! Split in two by the spectacular gorge of the Tajo river, with centuries-old houses teetering on the cliff top. I remember parking on my first visit on the site of what is now a hotel.

The setting of the town is magnificent and in spring the hills are alive with wild flowers, the old town with its Moorish palaces and street layout is a must-see. Start at the main bridge, the Puente Nuevo, and head south east through the winding alleys, keeping close to the gorge. At Plaza Duquesa de Parcent, go north-east, crossing the road out of town, and head down the hill to the peaceful restored Arab Baths then cross the gorge via the Puente Viejo (old bridge) and circle back through the new town to the edge of the gorge.

The century-old, British-built Hotel Victoria makes an evocative place to take afternoon tea, sitting in the gardens which inspired the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Also in the New Town you have the oldest and possibly most beautiful bull ring in Spain and museum and parks along the cliff edge. Being inland and in an elevated position, the seasons can be extreme with very hot summers and some cold winter days. This is of course part of the appeal with the changing seasons providing new views and variety.

The nearest point on the coast is Marbella, the nearest airports Malaga or Sevilla whilst the magnificent scenery begins at the doorstep. If you are looking for a home in the Ronda area it won’t come cheap. Magnificently restored country Cortijos or newer villas tend to be large and expensive but you will get what you pay for; style, quality and a wonderful place to live.
