Villanueva del Trabuco

Villanueva del Trabuco is an attractive, vibrant, full-service Andalusian pueblo blanco just about 35 kms from Antequera and 45 kms or 30 minutes from Malaga city, Malaga airport and the nearest beach on the Costa del Sol. Granada city is about an hour with the ski slopes within easy reach from there.

The area around the village is largely gently rolling countryside but there are fine mountain views to the south and it doesn’t take long to get into the hills. Closer to home the Guadalhorce and Higueral rivers run through the pueblo and provide many attractive country walks along their banks.

As usual, the heart of the village is the central plaza and in Trabuco this is known as the Plaza de Prado. It is surrounded by most of the village shops as well as a good selection of bars and restaurants and of course the town hall or ayuntamiento. This is the place to meet friends, do business or celebrate special events. The centerpiece of the village is the famous fountain known as the Fuente de los tres Caños. The water from this fountain, which is said never to dry up, is one of the best sources of water in the province.

 Special events include:

Candelmas which is celebrated in the village on the 1st of February and then at the end of the month there are Carnival celebrations.

Easter Week (Semana Santa). In common with the rest of Andalusia, Easter week is observed with colourful and impressive traditional processions, the most important of which are on Thursday and Good Friday evenings.

The San Marcos romaria takes place on 25th April the sees the whole village decamp to the countryside for what is supposed to be a pilgrimage but is in reality a huge picnic.

June is real party time with the first week being the village feria followed a few days later by the San Antonio quarter of the village celebrating it’s patron saints day and then a little later two days of celebrations for the night of San Juan.

Towards the end of August the village celebrates is annual fair.

Trabuco has been popular with home buyers for a long time now. It’s beautiful setting and close proximity to the Costa ensure that you can get the best of all worlds; the life of rural Andalusia with the bright lights of the Costa within easy reach for when you want a reminder of why you live in Trabuco! The other big attraction today is that home prices are down as a result of the recession and there are some real bargain distressed sales to be had.
